Business name programmed against a PRI

Our compnay would like to have our company name and DID number delivered on on external calls. Internally we would like to display the user name of the DID as programmed against the telephone. Our service provider guarantees us that there is no possible way to have a business name programmed against a PRI. Does the Nortel Meridian PBX have the ability to display the company name on all outgoing calls without displaying the user name associated with the telephone? The call display is capable of 23 characters with the first 15 delivered externally, I know we can program the name display to have the company name delivered and the user name following but this seems like a hack job. Any suggestions.

Re: Business name programmed against a PRI

I've been over and over this with one of our company sites in Canada. In the US, AT&T can set the company name at the circuit level. According to my AT&T rep, who looked at one for me when I was trying to get this done in Canada, there is a field on their setup for Caller ID Name. Bell Canada insists that they do not/cannot set this. I guess it depends on your carrier.

Otherwise, on Avaya anyway, you can send the station name or nothing.

Re: Business name programmed against a PRI

I have been 12 rounds on this particular subject recently. My info is based on the system in the US. What I have found is that there are a few options. If you have a PRI and want to send out individual DID numbers then your equipment must have the capability. On Avaya equipment you can send the DID number, but in terms of the name you can only send the name display field of the individual station. Basically the internal name and the external name are the same field in the Avaya world. In Cisco Call Manager you actually have 2 fields. One is used internally and the other is sent externally. This can be handled on a profile basis or on individual extensions. I have no idea how Nortel handles this.

At any rate, if you send the individual DIDs over the PRI from your equipment you will either send the name your equipment is set up to send, or you will send nothing for the name. Our Avaya systems are sending the DID numbers and no name at most of our sites.

The phone company will not show anything except what you send, if you send something. So if you send the DID number and no name, the phone company will leave the name field blank. If you send them nothing (no number or name) then they will add the number and name of record. In AT&T world the number is known as the LANI (not sure if it is different w/other companies). That is set when you install the T1. It is changeable but it seems to be a major pain for them to change so try to get it right when you order T1s. The second piece is known as the Name of Record. This is the name associated with the LANI number you gave them. This Name of Record may or may not be registered with the same company. For instance a common practice is to select a LANI that is the same as your office main local number. That number is often a ground start trunk which may be provided by your LEC (while the T1 may be provided by your LD carrier). With all the telco mergers these now overlap, but they often still do not. So if you need to change the Name of Record you need to contact the provider of the number you selected for the LANI.

We had a site that used a DID number, which somehow was cancelled and sold to another company. So for a while when people called out of our company they send ANI for a different company name. That was embarrassing. If you want the full DID number and company name you might want to repost in the Nortel area to see if anyone knows the possibilities of your particular system.
