Extension problem
I have an older partner system (AT&T).
Today, for no apperant reason, there is one extension where you can't hear anything. I have swapped phones, cords, etc. all to no success. I can pick up a line and it will dial out, but I hear no dial tone or voice on the line. I suspect this a wiring issue? Does that make sense? All wires run through the walls and there has been no changes. I'm pulling out my hair! Thanks, Steve |

Re: Extension problem
If the "voice" pair is open, you will have lights and display, but no sound.
Take the telephone, with it's line cord, back to the control unit. Unplug the connecting cord for that extension number, and plug the phone directly into the system. If it works there, you have a wiring problem. If it doesn't work at the control unit, and another working phone also doesn't, the extension port on the control unit has gone bad, and you need to connect the jack to a new extension number. |

Re: Extension problem
Krubin: Partner phones use 4 wires, analog phones use 2 wires and the partner system has hybrid ports that can use either one, the partner phones use the first pair for voice communication the second pair is for power and for data.

Re: Extension problem
Is it a single line or a multiline phone? Have you tried dialing the number from another phone? What happens? If it is a single line phone, is there a chance that it is "looped" to another phone? If so the other phone may be off the hook, which would give you "dead air". If you pick up the handset and dial, you will hear it, but it doesn't go anyplace because the line is already active. Do a "status station" and see if it says "in service/off hook" or something similar. Also, shorted wires/pins on the jack could produce a similar situation.

Re: Extension problem
twillgood one but the command, status station doesn't work on partners, youhave been dealing with Definity for to long . Partners can only see on auto dial buttons if the extension is in use. But worth a shot anyways

Re: Extension problem
Oops, sorry! It has been a while! LOL I still would be interested to know if it is an analog or a digital phone though. If it is analog, there could still be a phone sharing the extension and has been left of the hook. Or as I said the pins in the jack could be touching, or even a damaged line cord. Any of these could cause a line to be "open".

Re: Extension problem
To test this correctly, plug the phone directly into the port on the Partner system(As TTT sais). If it works, then there is a wiring problem, test your cabling. If it does not work, then try a different port. It could be the port went bad or the phone did as well.
