Question New system design help requested

I am building a new (large) house and I am trying to decide what to install for a phone system and where to buy one. I will probably have 10+ phone locations where I want to be able to provide phone service and intercom capabilities.

Is there some place on the web I can see system designs examples that will help me spec/design/layout a system for a large house?

Any suggestions on equipment to use or avoid?

Any other advice is appreciated

I would definitely go with a partner system. You have to look at what features you are going to need? How many phone lines. Do you want a system compatible with analog phones? Voice mail? How many voice mail boxes? Once you get all of that info, look on a few wholesalers web sites. I am sure you will find that aPartner system will have the features that you are looking for, as well as being the most inexpensive.

...but if you want a really COOL IP based phone system, have a look at the new IP Office Small Office edition. It is an amazing device, I have had one in my office/home now for several months & think this is the next big thing for the SOHO market. It supports analog phones, digital phones & IP phones. It is also a small 10/100mbps ethernet hub for computer connections. It will serve as a DHCP server for a small network. It is a Router for your High Speed internet, a firewall and even a remote access server! (You can call into it remotely & access your home network & the internet if connected). You won't find a whole lot of information on the internet as to configurations but any reputable Avaya dealer should be willing to give you a quote.

I of course would be happy to give you a sample configuration & pricing if you are interested? Visit my website at www.geckotel.com to get a sample of what I am talking about.

I have done a lot of custom work on large homes and all they have ever asked for is Panasonic systems. Because you can use system or analog phones. The system phones give them the "handsfree" option and the door boxes are clean looking. Features and price is what, in the end, matter most to some customers. Definitely list the features that you are going to use or need most and research!

Good Luck!

I would choose the Avaya Partner ACS over any other system. Many would argue that would be overkill, but when looking at your needs, this would fit perfect. I have wired several houses and sold many Partner systems to people in your arena. As well, with the Avaya system, you are gaining the quality for a long-term phone system. One thing I would tell anyone who plans to use a small phone system in their home is to ensure what the post-sales support is like. What is the warranty and is there a chance to go under any type of maintenance contract? There are several key advantages to using the Partner in you home. Please feel free to e-mail me to discuss it further.

Re: New system design help requested

My vote is for the Partner ACS. It is the easiest and friendliest system around for a residential application. That with the Partner Voice Messaging card for lite voicemail is a tough combo to beat. I install both the Partner and IP Office (as another responder suggested). If a "one box" solution for voice and data is appripriate, the IP Small Office would be great. If not, Partner ACS is the winner!
