Avaya to Nortel
I just left an Avaya shop but I just took a new job that is a Nortel shop and I want to know if there was and translation of some common Avaya commands to Nortel commands? Anything will help as I’m just starting on a Nortel switch. |

Re: Avaya to Nortel
I was on an Avaya/Lucent switch for about 9 years. Was laid off and now have been on a Nortel PBX for the last 2 years and let me tell you... It's like night and day! Avaya has wonderful screen layout (GUI) and Nortel has command prompting. When I began I liked it as I was offered another Avaya switch posiotion but chose the Nortel as a challenge and it sure is. EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING must be programmed just to make a phone work, I had simple issues such as making a number roll to the next available line and it had to be short hunted to work, messages on a phone have to specify a light indicator. I went to training in Texas and 2 years later am still learning things.
The best things to help you along would be if there is OTM on site as building a telephone set can make you just and OTM has a wonderful GUI to help you. Also the CPY command is great too, but for advanced things such as adding a T1's or upgrade I suggest school or a good trainer to show you along. Get to know the various loads and there are many books out there to help you also. When in class a very factual remark was made when I explained my previous Avaya experience. "Wow man, I heard that Avaya was the Cadallac of PBX's" and all I could do was laugh because he was so right. On the good side if you are one who likes challenges as I do and have the oppurtunity for training then by all means GO FOR IT or are not going at the PBX alone (as I did) then it's great and looking back I'm glad I did it, cause it sure keeps the brain active I'll say. |

Re: Avaya to Nortel
I was on a Nortel switch for a couple of years and now work at an Avaya shop. If anyone could help me with a crash course for Avaya, specifically the Merlin Majix, I would certainly appreciate it. Also, I would gladly email my documentation/notes for a Nortel Meridian 1 to whoever wants it. Thanks- twilinsky@hotmail.com

Re: Avaya to Nortel
Have your company send you to the data base administration course. Not the moves adds and changes course it will do you no good. Then have them send you to the Install and Maint course.
