Dialing Out With 9 Sometimes Not Working

Hello - So i am basically a n00b. I am the IT where i work.. but I am very unfamiliar with our phone system - i have figured out most of the basic switch commands and am comfortable doing stuff on our switch. We are having a problem dialing out with 9. It is not always a problem, it will dial out fine for days, sometimes weeks at a time, then it will just stop working, it will say "release and try again" with a fast busy signal. We call the people that set up the system, they login to the switch... screw around for a bit, and fix it... but only a few days later it is messed up again. I am trying to learn the entire phone system myself, so i can fix these errors and others that may happen in the future. Anyone have any ideas what is making 9 stop working? If someone has any clue why its doing this.. please help
Thanks
Joel

It is possible that there is nothing wrong at all. You have a limited number of trunks connected to your system and if all of the trunks are in use then the system will give you a fast busy and the release and try again display.

When you get this message you can check the status of your trunks to see if they are all in use. Depending on the type of trunks you have you would open LD 60 and at the "." prompt type STAT this will list all of your digital trunks and the status of each channel. If you only have COT lines then you can stat the TN's in LD 32.
Be aware that if a call is disconnected before you stat the trunk it may show a channel as idle.
It may be worth your effort to run a traffic study to see if you need more trunks. The standard that I was told to use is that it is acceptable for 10% of your calls to get a busy signal but this depends on your business type and company preference.

See i understand that.. if that was the case... but without ANYONE on the phone.. dialing out with 9 (blocks call ID) is a fast busy... but when u dial out with 8 (shows caller id) it works....

Since you are using 8 and 9 to dial out you need to find out if 9 is AC1 or AC2. Is 9 used for local or LD calls or both? Same question for 8. In LD 90 print a couple of NPA's (or NXX's, and SPN's) for both AC's and compair the RLI's. Do both AC's use the same routes? If not check the route and trunk members programming to see what (if anything) is different.

I had a similar problem.

If you are using DODs, here is what happened with me.

Call processing looks to the bottom of the TN MBERS, first. Meaning it seeks tone at MBER 50 (on my set up) If that copper is bad, the switch stops looking for tone, why? Haven't the foggiest. Check the STAT was mentioned earlier. If higher number MBERs are DSBL, that is what your service provider has been doing. Not bad huh? They get a service call to disable one or two TNs. Hope that helps you out some.
