We had trouble with two of our DS3's and after 10 long hours I heard a tech on the conf call say that he removed a board from the OC48 and placed us in protected mode.
Question is, why would one card crap out two ds3's? What is "protected" mode? Any thoughts/comments? |

An OC48 is, by definition, 48 DS3's. The capacity of the cards in the OC48 shelf is th reason that 2 DS3's might crap out. Just as a Definity circuit pack might have 24 digital ports, one DS3 card in the OC48 shelf might have 4+ DS3's on it. Removing that DS3 card would cause multiple DS3's to fail if multiple DS3's were translated and connected to it.
Typically, carrier quality hardware has redundant systems. For instance the Eastern Research DNX line (http://www.ericn.com) has a "protection switch" which houses the fail-over hardware for redundancy. One card in the primary shelf is designated the redundant card and should any given card fail then the protection switch would re-route all digital connections from the failed card to the redundant card until the bad card could be replaced. When this happens you would be in "protection mode." Removing a card would be defined as a failure of that card.
