Voice over IP is great
All i can say is that i just started using Voice over IP with a company called vonage.com and it is a great service. Quality is actually better than the phone (louder dial tone and voice once connected). Service is 25.99 or 39.99 a month and you can have a number from just about anywhere. I am in CA and have a NY number so it is local for family and friends to call me. You can add virtual numbers also for $5 a month. This may sound like an ad, but i am very impressed with it. I do have cable modem which may be why it is so good, but i do recommed it for anyone. Interesting comment about VOIP. My company is testing for connection to the UK. We tried two different systems and like you we were impressed with the voice quality.
