Anyone got any. I'm thinking of setting up our fax as a VDN and doing some ANI filtering. This will work on the faxes I'm getting from 999-999-9999, however some of them show a calling party number with 'alternate characters' like Ñ Ü and other's.

While this approach seems reasonable for one or two instances is there anything that would let me block at the trunk level?

That is a hot topic for me. I have several sights throughout the country. I emailed all of my admins at these sights and asked them to make a pike of all their junk faxes, then when the get alot and have other "crap" to send, send them to me. Once I have them, I call the remove number on the bottom of the fax for each one. It has been 6 months since I started this. Junk faxes have decreased alot, but not completely. Maybe someday....

I've been using the # to remove faxes for a while and I'm convinced all that is being accomplished, is confirming my fax number to the culprits. What is burnin' my britches is when the fax cpn number is the same number used for the removal service, or when the cpn number is 999-999-9999.

I've dealt with this frequently myself in the past. The bad news is that usually their ANI is usually either blocked or changed frequently. Also, when calling the 'removal number' at the bottom of the faxes, they usually just have an option for 1 number when, in fact, I needed to remove a LARGE range of a few hundred up to a thousand numbers.

I have had some small success with tracking the company's down, calling them directly and giving them the range of numbers to remove. Of course, working for a large company I usually follow that request up with a litigation threat if they do not cease and desist (whether this is true or not is not for them to know. ;) ) All and all, it's a lengthy process and the result's I've received have been very mixed. In the Northeast I've found that most of those faxes are sent by a few companies, same here in the South as well. A lot of the faxed spam companies work regionally, so I use to keep their numbers handy in case I saw new spam cropping up. Unfortunately, we've turned our faxserver support over to another group within my company so I no longer have that info or I'd be more than happy to share.

If you're curious as to how I tracked the companies down, I would call the company call back number that is on the ad (NOT the toll-free for removal at the bottom of the fax), ask to speak to their advertising people (again, vague legal threats work well here) and request information on how to contact whatever external company provides their fax advertising. Then I'd call them and complain. It's a good idea to keep their numbers handy, as they usually return to their spamming ways after a few months.

What I am about to suggest is highly unethical but very effective.

If by chance you actually do get a real fax number on the return, you can do the following;

Take 3 sheets of solid black paper and 1 sheet of white.

Write "remove number XXX XXX-XXXX from your database" on the white sheet

tape all the sheets togather making one long strip

Dial the fax number in question, after hours is best, hit send

Once the paper feeds out, take the loose end and tape it to the other end, making a loop

walk away for an hour or two



When the company arrives the next morning, they will be greated by hundreds of pages of black, courtesy of their toner cartridge, with intermittant messages asking them to remove your number.

A certain vendor that was welching on a 5K bill gave up after only 2 nights of this fun.

Again, not 100% ethical, but very effective.
