Question very n00b Q: user moving ext to new seating arrangement....

hello everyone, I have a user that's moving to another part of the office and I need to move her extension. what's the easiest to go about this? I am not at the location (I am in miami, the other office is in NY). I've heard that just moving the actual network cables is easier, but not possible.

please help me!

thanks,

ceez

Re: very n00b Q: user moving ext to new seating arrangement....

if it is a digital or analog phone then renumber

lets say the user has extension 123
renumber to 9123
then renumber the port the user has to go on to 123
if neceserry renumber the old port again to the old number of the new port

Remember that renumbering will require a reboot.

If the user is on a IP phone, then just pickup the phone and move to new location, assuming the new location has a CAT5 jack enabled for the LAN.

Re: very n00b Q: user moving ext to new seating arrangement....

thanks for the reply.
these are digital phones.
what I originally did was open the Manager
Expand the "Extensions" section
Sort by extension and look for the 2 extensions that I want to swap
Swapped Extension #'s within the to ID's.
Ie:
Extension 2808 - ID 171
Extension 2809 - ID 172

I moved 2808 to ID 172
&
I moved 2809 to ID 171

I then did a Merge Config but the user states that the phone still displays the wrong name.

Did I do that correctly?

Thanks again!

Re: very n00b Q: user moving ext to new seating arrangement....

@tlpeter, I didnt change the ID's, I just changed the extension numbers.... I typed 2808 on ID 172 and then typed 2809 on ID 179. I swapped the extensions within thed 2 ID's. The text box that displays the ID is grayed out.
So I dont know if I did it correctly and I did a reboot instead of a merge config...still the user reports that the extension has not swapped! :(

Does the config show your change? I would make sure, then try again. If it asks for a merge, make it reboot.
