I have installed a new IPO 403 on a network with an active DHCP server. However, the IPO 403 does not recieve a DHCP address and instead assumes the default address of 192.168.42.1.
The DHCP server is a Netgear FVS318 firewall/router. It is working successfully for numerous other devices on the network (switches, access points & workstations) issuing addresses on the 192.168.0.x network. I have confirmed that the IPO 403 is connected. In fact, the manager application will find it during its (broadcast) search but is unable to download the config from it. Any ideas on what's going on here? |

Re: IPO 403 not receiving DHCP address
Did you verify that the IP Office is set as a DHCP client instead of server? Found in System on LAN1 tab. Personally, I would recommend that the IP Office be static simply because so many applications (Phone Manager, etc) are configured to a particular IP address - it just makes life easy if IP Office (and Voicemail Pro) are static...

I intend to give it a static address as soon as I can get to it to configure it.
The IP network of LAN is 192.168.0.x. According to the IPO documentation, the IP office should act as a DHCP client and lease an address from the pool I have defined for that network. Instead, it assumes the default address of 192.168.42.1. I assume that it sets the default gateway to itself (192.168.42.1) so even if I add a route to the .42 network, I still can't communicate with it. I've also tried to change the network number of the LAN to 192.168.42.x. The first problem was that my router conflicted with the IPO. I changed it's address to 192.168.42.2 and resolved that problem. However, the manager application still cannot communicate with the IPO. In fact, with this config, it won't even find it by broadcast on the same segment. I can ping the IPO but manager will not find it. Any help would be appreciated. |

Re: IPO 403 not receiving DHCP address
Out of the box, an IP Office is set as a DHCP server with the address of 192.168.42.1. Although it can be configured to work on any network, I stand by my earlier recommendation that you use a static IP address. Anyway, I'd isolate the IP Office from the rest of the network - and only have your computer/laptop connected to IPO. Set computer to 192.168.42.2 (or set to DHCP) - and see if you can communicate. You say that manager finds, but doesn't download the config... it is asking for a password? Are you entering the default password?

Re: IPO 403 not receiving DHCP address
I've reset the IPO to factory default using the DTE port. I've set my PC to a static address of 192.168.42.2. I can ping the IPO at 192.168.42.1. The ARP table on my PC is populated with the MAC of the IPO.
I run manager, create a BOOTP entry with the MAC and IP of the IPO but the manager app still cannot find the IPO. Any ideas? |

Re: IPO 403 not receiving DHCP address
First, you generally do not need to create a BOOTP entry within Manager - this happens automatically the first time you successfully connect. Maybe remove your entry and see if it makes a difference. Also, ensure that Manager is using the broadcast address of 255.255.255.255 (although fixing to 192.168.42.1 is also OK). When you attempt to retrieve the database, does it prompt you for a password? You may want to uninstall then reinstall Manager - as the trouble MAY be on the PC end of things. Is your version of Manager essentially appropriate for the version of IP Office? (with each major release of IPO, there was an updated version of Manager)

Re: IPO 403 not receiving DHCP address
Thanks to all for the help.
Lesson learned: I was attempting to configure the IPO with a laptop that had both a wired and wireless NIC. I would not have thought that the wireless interface was the default but it was. All broadcast traffic was going out that interface. Since the network that the access point was connected to was not connected to the IPO, the broadcast never made it to the IPO. Solution: Disable the wireless NIC. |
