I've spent a lot of time building custom CMS reports. I found the most helpful tool to be the database appendix with the explanation of all the SQL database items. Other than that I spent a lot of "trial and error" time in front of the monitor. Easiest way to build a custom report is to take a standard report, copy it into Screen Painter and then go to town modifying it.
