Asa

I'm looking to find out how ASA is setup to connect. I have 2 CLAN boards with ip addresses that end in .33 and .34. my ASA properties are set to connect to ip address .32. I have to move the cables for my clan boards from 1 network switch to another. What will happen to my ASA connection when this happens if anything and how do I get around that if there's an impact as I won't be able to do anything on the switch if I lose my connection?

Re: Asa

I will assume from your address that you have an S87xx switch and that is the shared address of the PBX. To find out if you will have an issue, ping something already in the other network. If you can, there should be no impact.

This assumes, of course, that you don't have to change the IP addresses on the CLANs because of moving them.

The workaround is to have ASA programmed to use the INADS dialup as an option.

Re: Asa

yes 2 8700 servers. I'm not quite understanding about pinging something in the other address.

To setup inads.. just setup ASA to use dialin via modem and then the dialin # of the pbx?

once i move these network cables to the other switch will the clans re-register automatically on their own because then I won't have to deal with any of this?

Re: Asa

To set ASA for dial in assign the dial in number and what com port you are using. Everything else you can leave default.

Let's talk about your network change for a minute. I no longer install systems for Avaya and the last time I did, CM3 was just going GA. So it is possible things have changed but I don't believe so. Al can correct me if I am wrong. When I stopped installing systems every device in the PBX that had an IP address had a static address, DHCP was not used.

Is the new network switch in the same LAN? Does use the same address range? What are your CLAN cards? Do they require the ports in the network server to be locked to 10M/half duplex or can they function at 100M/full duplex?

To ping something, start up ASA and log into the PBX. Type "ping" and press help and you will be stepped through the process of pinging something. Ask your network guys for the IP address of something currently working in the new switch. The PBX will give a pass if you can ping it. If you can ping it then you are lucky. All you have to deal with is what is in the paragraph above this one. If you can't ping it, then there are more issues.

S8700's have three (3) IP Addresses: 1 for Server A, 1 for Server B and 1 for the active server. If you are worried about loosing your CLAN connection while moving an ethernet connection, set ASA to the active server connection, port 5023.

Setting up DIAL-IN access to an S8xx0 server is a multi-step process. First you have to create a RAS login: "add login whatever" login type "remote." Then you create a RAS network connection from your PC to the RAS modem. The server will issue you an IP address that is usually one higher than it's own RAS IP ... i.e. if you do an ip config and your address is 10.23.24.6 then the RAS IP (the address you need to point ASA at) is 10.23.24.5 (port 5023).

I have attached a PDF on creating a RAS connection to an Intuity Audix LX ... the procedure is almost identical for S8xx0 servers.

Yes ... as long as the network switch is in the same subnet, VLAN, etc. and no network configuration or physical connectivity would prevent the CLAN's or their IPs to reach their intended destination.

You are correct with the singular exception of IPSIs which CAN be configured for DHCP addressing on a dedicated control network.

Re: Asa

That is how long it has been since I worked on one, I forgot about the IPSI. It has always been able to use DHCP, I always preferred that connection anyway. It looks like I will be getting my hands back in the S87xx and Modular Messaging, but as a customer this time.

My boss knows that I used to install them so he has tasked me with collecting the bids for six critical S8720 servers, six MM, and 2 mirrored CMS servers, sifting through them and making a recommendation.

I hope you're going to send one of those RFP's my way!
