troubleshooting static on paging system
I have a G3si w/ a TN 763 aux trunk board used for paging. The board has no errors or warnings, however after performing a 'test board 01A08 long' the results show:
Port Maint name Test no. Result 01A0802 AUX-TRK 33 PASS 01A0802 AUX-TRK 114 FAIL 01A0802 AUX-TRK 36 PASS I have notes from the previous tech who mentioned switching the 3 pairs for this paging system to port 2 because he supposed that port 1 'was going south'. could a FAIL of this type possibly cause the static noise over the PA that customers are complaining about? Before I try another port on this card, is there anything that I should/could do first to try? I unplugged the microphone on the PA amplifiers and the static went away, so I am concluding that the common-denom is the PBX or horiz cabling. ideas? cn |

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
Two of the most common causes of static on paging systems is that the cabling is not shielded or laying across fluorescent light fixtures. If the cables are shielded, make sure that one end of the shield is grounded and that the shield is continuous. This will require getting on a ladder and inspecting the connections at each speaker to make sure that the shield is not cut off. While in the ceiling check to see if the wires are contacting the ceiling fluorescent lights. If so, lift them off or reroute.
If you have multiple wire runs, try removing one leg at a time to see if the static goes away. If it does, then you have narrowed your trouble shooting to one run.

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
I was looking at that first. So I systematically unplugged the individual speakers from the amps and the noise continued. My reason for eliminating the interference from light ballasts etc, is mainly that this is occurring in two different buildings with two different amps. The only place that the two systems connect is on the wall in switch closet. So I am ruling against the possibility that these two systems coincidentally have interference at the exact same time of origination. Unless there is something I am missing. I haven't yet had to (thankfully) deal with this portion of our network, as a newbie.

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
I notice that the static went away when you unplugged the mike, do you have another mike to test with? It might just be a bad mike or dirty connections where the mike plugs in.

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
unfortunately this g3 switch is at another location(4 mi. away), so I am going back there now to continue on this problem, after taking care of things here on our main campus.
There is no microphone itself, there is a 1/4" phone plug in the microphone jack on the amplifiers. These plugs are beanied to cross connect which goto the 66 blocks. cn |

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
Make sure all the beanies and punchdowns are clean and tight. If the phone plug has been plugged in for a long time you might try polishing it.

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
This problem seemed to settle down for a while... however, complaints are starting again.
To better troubleshoot (after doing all martin suggested above) I would like to separate the two amplifiers (1 in each building) onto two different ports on the TN763D while using the same TAC (70#) for both ports. Is this possible? cn |

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
Type "change pag loud" and you will see your paging port there. Add the second port and put your existing page code down at the bottom where it says "ALL". I would suggest putting a page code for each zone so you can test them separately, just don't tell anyone what they are.

Re: troubleshooting static on paging system
just noticed this old thread and thought it would be good to let all know that I resolved the issue.
There was a burned out spot (circuit) on the UC 909 (universal coupler) replaced part ($100) and all is fine. |
