routing by area code

Our project sales group is split up by state and i need to be able to set up routing for them that looks at the incoming area code and routes the call to the salesperson responsible for that area. i have a basic idea of whats involved but i could use some guidance in finding lists of area codes and setting up the ani tables etc. thx in advance for any help

im using a definity g3i r12 with ACD

Re: routing by area code

I usually use this site for area code details:

http://www.areacode-info.com/

It has met my needs over the years, though it often seems like they stopped in the middle of upgrading their page and never finished it. The info on the site does get updated though.

From your post it sounds like you plan to use ANI to split calls when they come into your system. I have never attempted this, largely because I have been leery about the number of misses in the ANI system. It is better than caller-ID, but you still get a good number of unavailable info hits. I have been using a carrier feature from AT&T known as routing by originating area code. I assume that most major carriers have some flavor of it. Of course AT&T could be doing just the same thing, going off of the ANI information but for some reason I feel like they are likely to have more detailed info than when gets passed to us. Of course I have to pay for the feature, so maybe I just am making myself feel better about spending the money.

Re: routing by area code

actually i think i need to get some more info. the situation i have is we have a project sales 800 number that they would like to be able to have directed to different salespeople depending on where the call is coming from. i thought i would just need to enter the different are codes in a set of tables then do conditional routing based on whether the incoming area code was in a particular table or not but doing more reading im not sure thats what i need to do. i would rather not do this at the service provider level at this time if possible because we are planning to change providers soon

Re: routing by area code

You can reroute calls on the third page of the trunk group form but be aware that you will be using up trunks rapidly because the call is already in your PBX. If a call comes in to PBX A but you want it in PBX B, the call will use one trunk to come into PBX A, another trunk to route out of PBX A and another trunk coming into PBX B. All three trunks will remain in use until the call is completed and that will include any long distance charges that might apply.

Any calls from customers that do not choose to have their phone number identified will remain in PBX A whether you want them there or not.

its just one PBX, i think the easiest way of doing it is going to have the carrier do it on their end when we sign the new contracts. thanks guys, as always you rock

Re: routing by area code

If all your calls are in one PBX it is simple. On the third page of the trunk group put the area codes and what VDN or station you want those calls to come in on. You can use the web site that A-Train gave you or this one that I use frequently.

Area Code Listing, by Number

Re: routing by area code

How many different groups receive the calls? If only a few, say 4, then send the 800 # to a vector collect step and prompt for "To reach team 1, press 1", If 1, then go to step xx, route to VDN for that group. Thus, if a salesman travels outside his home area code he could still reach his assigned team.
