4610 IP Sets

We installed an S8300/G350 with CM3.1.2. The customer was complaining of static and echo on the 4610IP phones, we checked their TFTP server and they have the latest firmware loaded on the machine and the sets. We also turned automatic gain controll off in the settings file. Now the customer is stating that they get static when they use the handset, the echo is gone. They can use the speaker phone and do not get the static, it only occurs when they use the handsets. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rod~

Re: 4610 IP Sets

I've seen it more on 4620s than 4610s but one cause of the symptoms you describe is having a GSM device, like a cell phone or PDA too near the phone. The only time I have the problem on a 4610 is when my cell phone is in my pocket and the handset cord is across my chest. This problem doesn't occur in proximity to CDMA devices. I think it's related to the 1.9 gHz frequency that GSM phones in North America use - somewhere in the phones there is a wire about 6 inches long that's functioning as an antenna.

We are in a highrize in downtown San Francisco and the area is saturated with GSM signals. In some parts of our building we have 4620s that sit there all day chirping and gurgling away through the speakers with the sets on hook. Management has noticed and it does not reflect well on Avaya's product.

Avaya denies that this problem exists. If you talk to them about it, and I know several people who have, they will say they have never heard of it before.

Re: 4610 IP Sets

you could do a change terminal parameters. There are settings for audio levels here!

the command is change terminal-parameters. On page 2 you can do the settings you want. I could send you a default we always use.

Re: 4610 IP Sets

I am willing to try anything at this point. The customer is still complaining about the problem, so if you don't mind sending me what you have I would be truely grateful.

Re: 4610 IP Sets

I was having some similar issues described as an underwater sound or tunnel like. The problem could only be detected by the off pbx endpoint, in otherwords the VoIP caller did not notice any problems. In any case our VoIP problems were resolved by installing new Routers and Switches that support QoS.
My only advice. Make sure your network supports QoS.

In addition to supporting QoS, make sure that voice is given priority over data. If the network gets congested all transmissions will take a hit. Data can recover from that, voice cannot.
