POTS lines/ISDN Trunk

We want 5 POTS lines, which are being used as Fax machines, to ride over our ISDN local D.I.D trunk group. How do we accomplish this, and is there any wiring that will need to be peformed to accomplish this?

Thanks.

Re: POTS lines/ISDN Trunk

It's pretty simple. Just contact your service provider and have the numbers re-provisioned in their switch to terminate over the PRI instead of a line, then program the extension (last 4 digits, just like all other DID numbers) on an analogue port and cross connect the ports to the current locations of the fax machines.

There are a couple of things you need to look into before you move the numbers, though.

Will the fax numbers interfere with your current dialing plan or number ranges? To quickly test, dial the last 4 digits of each fax line from a working extension and see if they go anywhere - if they are not programmed you should just get reorder. Any that are programmed you will not be able to move. Instead, I would recommend killing these POTS lines and assign and publish a new DID in your existing range for every one that is being replaced.

Re: POTS lines/ISDN Trunk

I tried adding the new 4-digit numbers to our dial-plan and it would not allow me to add them. I received a message stating that "there is already a number assigned using the first digit" The numbers we want to add do not fall within our DID range except of one of the numbers. We can not change these fax numbers as they are used for our Sales Dept, and are published. What other options do we have, if we can not add the numbers to our dial-plan? We would really like to make them part of our DID group if possible.

Re: POTS lines/ISDN Trunk

I can think of only two ways to avoid having to rework your numbering plan.

The first is to have the telco set up disaster routing on each of the POTS numbers, which will repoint all calls to a new number which you can specify (one redirect number for each POTS line). You can then (potentially) have each of the POTS lines disconnected while retaining the numbers.

The second requires adding call forwarding feature to each of the POTS lines. You would not be able to disconnect the lines this way though - so if the goal is cost reduction, it's probably not a viable solution.

There is one other potential solution - number conversion. For example, the fax number is 555-555-1234. Having the number pointed to the PRI, you receive the digits 1234 on an incoming call. But your extension range is 2xxx. So you can change the digits to 2234 - which you would program as an analogue extension.

That error message indicates to me that you are using that number as a FAC or DAC. Depending on the software release of your PBX the command will be "disp dial" or "disp dial an". What are you using that first digit for?

You can probably do this but you might have to change some Feature Access Codes or some Dial Access Codes. You also might have to create a second digit table.

Re: POTS lines/ISDN Trunk

We have a G3v11 system I was sucessful in adding the extensions to the dial plan. I just needed to add only the first digit and make the length 4-digits. Thanks for your help.

Appreciate all the help. I've got all the info. I need to accomplish this now.

Re: POTS lines/ISDN Trunk

I know this is an old post but for future reference - you can get any telco to do what is called digit manipulation - for example if the fax number is 734-1234 you can get them to send any 4 digets you want - 2234 that would of solved this problem.
