IPSI Verification

We have an S8710 with six port networks. Avaya recommends that only five nodes be registered to one IPSI board. We have two IPSI boards and I need to verify that five are registering with one IPSI and the other node is regestering with the other IPSI.
Does anyone know what the command is to verify this?

Thanks

Re: IPSI Verification

It actually is not a recommendation, it is a limitation. One IPSI will support no more than five port networks, period.

I don't have an S87xx server I can look at right now so I will let someone else tell you if there is a command to identify which port networks are connected through which IPSI. Unless something has changed in recent loads, you cannot tell a port network which IPSI to use.

Re: IPSI Verification

Not true. I had six nodes registered to one IPSI.

But as an FYI, the command to see what IPSI a node is registering to is "status sys-link xyxxxx"

Re: IPSI Verification

Interesting.

When I was installing S87xx servers (I no longer do that) the installation documents very clearly stated no more than five port networks per IPSI was supported. The specs also stated that and that is what Avaya teaches in the S87xx Installation and Maintenance classes. That is even one of the questions on the test at the end of the class.

They drum it in very hard.

Have you found a command to tell a port network what IPSI to use?

Make the second IPSI out of service and see the status of cabinets .

Re: IPSI Verification

The command is status sys-link xyxxxx, where xyxxxx (2A0101 or 2A01) is the cabinet and port of the maintenance board and not a cabinet with an IPSI.
You'll get results that look like the following:

status sys-link 2a0101 Page 1 of 2
Location: 02A0101 Type/Chan: EAL Alarms: none
Current Path: present State: up Time Up: 06/03/2006 06:37

PN 05 PKT-BUS none

This would obviously have to be done after hours since it would be service affecting.

This question taked directly from the AVA00545AEN examination:
An S8700 Media Server solution with six port networks requires a minimum of ____ TN2312BP IPSI circuit packs.

1

2

6

12

Correct!

The correct answer was two (2). A single IPSI board will only support five (5) Port Networks.

Understandable that Avaya's documentation and exams say that only five nodes are supported per IPSI. However, in a live environment, six does work. I ran with six for about six months. I have since added another IPSI to separate the load.

Just adding an IPSI isn't going to induce a server to move port networks to it automatically. You probably had to reboot the server to get that done because I am still unaware of a command to tell a server to use IPSI number two for port networks 5 and 6.

I am wondering if you had some impaired functionality with that many port networks on one IPSI. Kind of like having five chairs in a row but seating six people in them, you can do it but nobody is comfortable.
