Don't ever be afraid to keep asking questions; it's the foundation of knowledge.

Peripheral hardware manufacturers never really got away from the idea of using 'switchtype' instead of 'protocol version' but in their world they mean one in the same.

So yes, on the Polycom the value you need to set is switchtype, but it's not going to be the same as the one on the DS1 form. The protocol used on a DS1 defines the message set used on that DS1 - and for no other devices.

You need to match the Polycom to the TN566. As I said previously, I don't know if you can actually set the protocol on the TN566... we don't have one at our location so I can't pull up the page, and I haven't been able to find any instructions on the web. But if you are prompted for SPIDs when programming your card, it's probably using National ISDN.

One last clarification, protocol on a DS1 is set on the Signalling Group. The most common used are: A = AT&T Custom, B = National ISDN, C = NTI.

This muddies things just a little, I do not recall ever changing the protocol in the signalling group from A. I have done this a few thousand times and have never had a problem. I do, however, have to change the protocol on the DS1 page frequently. The common choices are -

A= NI1 and 4ESS
B= NI2 and 5ESS
C= DMS100
D= NI2 Enhanced, I have not used it yet but you need a 5ESS with the latest software to use this

Perhaps I have just been lucky.

Re: Polycom Video Conf using the TN556B

My bad!!! You are absolutely correct marty, the protocol version is set on the DS1. Must have had my head somewhere I shouldn't for a moment.

U certain about the protocol version a? I thought that was necessary for AT&T custom... found this in the Avaya book under Public network signaling administration for ISDN-PRI Layer 3 (for country code = 1):

a United States, Canada AT&T TR 41449/ 41459 (tested with AT&T network, Canadian network, and MCI network)
b United States Bellcore TR 1268; NIUF.302; ANSI T1.607
c United States NORTEL DMS-250 BCS36/IEC01
d United States Telecordia SR-4287

Re: Polycom Video Conf using the TN556B

There could be more choices now for protocol A, I learned this a long time ago. Most CO's are fairly standard now and +95% of the time will give you NI1 (protocol A) or NI2 (protocol B) by default. Does make things a lot simpler than the old days.

I dug out some old notes and you are correct, AT&T custom is also protocol A. I don't remember using that for a while, though.
