Enabling QOS on Cisco Router
Does anyone know how much overhead is created by enabling QOS on a router? I would like to change my codec to G.711. However, I am worried about the performance of my network after the change. Both my Voice and Data traffic reside in the same network. Will enabling QOS on my Cisco router kill my network?

Re: Enabling QOS on Cisco Router
Hello probchild.
I have same experience using ip telephony and I never try to solve problems puting QOS over network. I think that QOS is defined over the data link layer and it don't use to go over network layer (routing between networks). If you want to activate the 802.1 p/q for getting QOS in your LAN network you must be sure that your systems (switchs) are able to manage it because not every system are able to do it. In dependence of your network topology, design and quality, the G711 codec migth affect the traffic netwrok or not. We have a 100Mbps ethernet LAN network working with G711 codec and it works fine and doen't affect the bandwitdh. If your are worried about the quality and the network traffic of you network, you could solve the problem making diferent VLAN for data and voice too. I think that it is a better solution than the QOS over LAN. Excume for this longer answer. deimos. |
