IP softphone sort-of working but not really?
Good afternoon all, I am having all sorts of problems getting the softphone client working correctly through a PIX classic firewall. Inside the firewall, using Road Warrior, I can make and receive a call outside the firewall, although these a large delay. Once I try connecting from outside the firewall, this is what happens:
I can connect to the call server, I can make a call to a desk phone, I can hear DTMF tones on the phone I'm calling to, and in my headset, when pressing number keys from the softphone client, but cannot hear any voice audio on either end. Nor can I hear any DTMF tones back from the phone I called when listening from the headset! We've made several changes in the PIX, but apparently there's still something not set correctly. Is there anything in the PBX that needs to be changed, in the IP-?? setting pages? In the PIX, the internal IP's are NAT'd out to the DMZ interface, which is how we connect to the PBX. I can provide a config from the PIX if anyone wants. We only use this firewall to separate the Telecom world from the LAN world, so the config is fairly small and straightforward. Any help will keep me from beating my head on my keyboard again. Thanks in advance, TT |

Re: IP softphone sort-of working but not really?
I had similar problems.. you need to make sure you are using the correct codec and you need to specify the proper range of ports that are opened on the firewall. I believe you need 2 ports.. 1 for the connection and the other for audio. the audio port the Pbx was grabbing was outside the range that was opened on the network. Once we changed that in the pbx to match it worked perfect. I believe the command is: disp ip-network-region 1

Re: IP softphone sort-of working but not really?
Hey Maltman, we finally got it working correctly last night, again, sort of...
We are using the same codec, and for the time being, all UDP ports are open on the firewall, but those will be closed down to what is in the PBX later today. We realized that we needed to static map the medpro IP address through the firewall into the dmz as the same address. Once we did that, it connected and audio came through, but the problem we've seen now is that the audio is broken up real bad. I believe that is happening because we're connected to a 10/100 hub, rather than a switch. But we have a spare we're going to connect after-hours tonight to see if that's the resolution to this new problem. Thanks for the help, TT |

Re: IP softphone sort-of working but not really?
You are going to want all your IP interfaces in the PBX connected to a switch. Each switch port should be forced to 100/full. NOT auto. Also, you will need to change all IP interface to 100/full. Not Auto. If you decided to leave one side at auto the other side must be auto also and you will probably only get 100/half. What I am getting at here is that both sides must match.
PBX Switch auto - auto 100/Ful l- 100/Full |

Also make sure the headset you're using is USB. I tried a regular one and the sound card on the motherboard of my laptop sucks so the sound was terrible. Once i put a usb one on it was almost perfect.

Hey Maltman, that's also good advice. I'm testing with one that plugs into the regular mic and speaker ports. If we have poor audio issues, I'll get a USB one and test with that one. Thanks again, TT

I use plantronics DSP-400. It is USB and foldable, which works good when you have to carry it to and from work and only $50. I just got a plantronics CS50-USB. It uses bluetooth as is wireless. They say it can go up to 200 feet from the base. More like 50 feet. It's is Ok but not great for $175.
