S8710 Time

Our S8710 server keeps losing time. I have set it yesterday and it has lost eight minutes since.

Can anyone tell me why it keeps losing time?

Is there a way to sync it up with a time server?

Thanks

Yes. From the "Maintenance Web Interface" select "Configure Server" and then Individual Services. You will see a time server configuration option there. Place your Corporate NTP server's IP addreess here or point to time.nist.gov or time-a.nist.gov. If you use a naming convention instead of an IP address then DNS must also be setup correctly in the S8700. You must perform this task on BOTH servers.

Al,

Thanks for the information. Can I do this without bringing the switch down?

Yes. It should not be service affecting.

Re: S8710 Time

This is a known problem with Avaya. The latest Avaya Tier 4 testing shows that there are issues with the Time settings on the 8700s. When the system boots, services are started in a particular order. If ntp is enable to start at boot time, not only does it not start, but any services that are supposed to start after it also do not start. For example, the Web server and call processing. If ntp is disable at boot time, all services start correctly. Whether ntp is configured to use external servers for synchronization or not doesn't change the faulty start up. Tier 4 is continuing to investigate.
Avaya also advises me that a patch does not exist today and they will have to create one after some further review of this issue. If you call TAC they can walk you through getting the Time corrected. If you reboot your media server the problem will come back. I hope this helps

I just installed an S8710 complex in Chicago last week with NTP enabled. The system was/has been rebooted several times without incident.

I am seeking further clarification directly from Avaya. I'd be interested to know if you have a direct contact at Avaya who can confirm this. Feel free to private message me.
