Very interesting thread - at my workplace (which is/was all Nortel), they've started using Cisco IP equipment in some remote offsite facilites. So far it has not been a positive experience for anyone involved.

You better ensure your boss doubles your staff and hands everyone pagers--you will need them. Or, do it the hard way.. replace everything, then have it fail, then replace it with Avaya after your boss is let go.

Re: Cisco IP system might replace my avaya
We are doing a similar thing with our Cisco VOIP system. However, instead of just replacing everything at once we are replacing our remote Partner systems with VOIP. So far so good it is really not all that difficult. The biggest problem that we have is our Unity voicemail system and Call Managers. Since they both are windows based systems we get to do alot of patch downloads because windows is not very stable. As far as the Cisco routers and switches go they are very stable and can be configured for remote survivability. I would suggest getting a good vendor to help you guys out like NEC. I would also suggest doing this migration in small steps as opposed to doing the whole thing at once. That is career suicide.

Re: Cisco IP system might replace my avaya
Cisco makes good phones, but the call manager application just blows. At least Avaya is going to open standards, unlike Cisco!
if you want a SOLID IP solution check out Zultys. They have an amazing product which is 100% open standards based. We are working with a company right now that has 14 remote locations, mostly T1 tied. With the Zultys solution we are able to cluster them into a single PBX. Its fantastic.. I could go on about how cool this product is.. but not today. another solution is Asterisk.. Open-Source PBX. its CHEEP, but not an easy task to deploy but well worth it in the long run. Asterisk will turn the telecom work upside down in time! But i will tell you what you can deploy a 10 user office for under $2000. |

Re: Cisco IP system might replace my avaya
I just wanted to share something about windows based applications. I consultant for a company who just go infected with a virus. The virus took out many windows machines and caused the company to completely shut down their LAN. No access to email and no access to the internet for a few days (some machines more than others). This virus brought a multi million dollar company to a stand still. People were walking around with nothing to do. Microsoft and Macfee suggested that the IT staff rebuild every machine one by one to ensure that this virus was compltly gone. Then the machine could be put back on the LAN. What a mess. But not for me. I am so glad that my Definity does not run Windows. The only thing that I needed to do during this whole mess was to place a 8 port switch between the Definity and Audix becuase all LAN cables were unpluged. If I had a Cisco solution at this company my PBX would have been down just like everything else.
Probably something to think about if your boss wants to move to a windows based PBX. :D |

Re: Cisco IP system might replace my avaya
I've been runing an AVAYA system and a Cisco CallManager system now for a few years. Our company has decided to go completely to Cisco now. The Cisco system has been good, but in order to do the call center piece I will now have 12 Windows servers to maintain instead of one AVAYA system.

Realtechnews.com has a candid state of security (or lack thereof) on the Windows PC platform, the same platform that a number of IP Telephony solutions, including Cisco CallManager, rely on. As if we needed a reminder just how insecure the world’s number one server infrastructure platform is, check out Realtechnews.com’s statistics:

Re: Cisco IP system might replace my avaya
Keep this in mind... Don't make the boss' product choice seem like a bad one. You just need to make him aware that Avaya is a little (LOT) better in the long run. There are several side by side comparisons available on the web that will help with that. Actually you should be able to get several from Avaya's website.
