Need advice on Dial plan change.
My department is begining to look at merging two switch platforms, one G3R V9.5 and an S8700 CM 2.0 . The Dial plans over lap and their are duplicate extensions on both switches.
We have proposed one solution where we will change one of the switches to 5-digit extensions. To do this we'll need to change a large number of station extensions. We can export most of the stations and then modify the extensions and re-import them into the switch, however how can we retrieve the Button assignments to the phones since these are not included when exporting stations? Also if you have another suggestion on how to make this more simple any help would be appreciated.

when we did it we went from 4 to 5 digits, easy solution. although we paid Avaya do to a 'blowback'. even easier :)
But I have exported/imported a whole switch via ASA, not hard either. |

Re: Need advice on Dial plan change.
it's not that bad to use ASA if you have a standard phone setup for each type of phone, but if everybody's setup is different, you're much better off paying Avaya or another vendor to use ProVision and blowback. If you do it yourself, make sure you capture all that wonderful stuff like pickup groups, abbreviated dial personals, intercoms, etc that doesn't come along with the station. You can always do a "list usage extension xxxx" to get a feel for what you need to capture.

Re: Need advice on Dial plan change.
So is ProVision available for purchase? We do have many custom setups for phones so....
I would like to use templates and just configure every settype in a uniform manner. Only difficulty lies in the fact that we have many remote locations and do not always have easy access to them, so we would have to instruct the users to re-label their phones. In addition we have a transient style of workforce, most employees are only here for our ski season and then take months off in the summer. To make matters worse sometimes they disconnect their stations and stash them in a closet or who knows.... Thanks for the replies... Judging from the responses we will probably just contract with a vendor.

Re: Need advice on Dial plan change.
I would also strongly suggest making BOTH sites, or all sites, the same digit lengths.. just my thoughts.. that way you can DCS them together.. or make IP trunking easier down the road.. I know that means changing a site entirely.. 5 years from now, you'll thank yourself if you make ALL sites the same digit lengths.. and unique at that.
I would also, for all sites, designate ranges for modems, nonDIDs, etc, etc.. same with CORs, coverage paths, etc.. make everything the same that can be. A vendor can do this, but will likely screw it up, sorry to say. It's more work, but easier to change it yourself. or to contract portions of it out, and make the big changes yourselves. |
