Definity Graceful Shutdown

Hi,
could someone explain the right way of shutting down Definity switches? Is there a command to gracefully shutdown the system?

Thanks

Save translations then powere\ down using the switch on the back of the cabinet if they are stackable single carrier units. If you have the all the carriers in one cabinet where you open the front door to see all the Ckt Packs the power switch is in front down at the bottom of the cabinet behind a metal removeable plate. You can also power down single carriers in the unit by removing power from the carrier power supplies.

Why are you powering down ?

Re: Definity Graceful Shutdown

It's also a real good time to check your UPS if you haven't done so lately

Re: Definity Graceful Shutdown

How do I shut down my Definity system?

1. Before a shutdown, make a current back up of the translations on a good tape or memory card. Use the command save translations.
2. If you have announcement boards in your system, save the announcements. Use the command save announcements. This could take up to 40 minutes. If available, use a new card or tape for each announcement board.
3. Perform a graceful shutdown of all adjuncts such as Intuity Audix, Call Management System or Call Accounting System. This will prevent alarms and make it easier to reboot the system. For instructions, go to the Web site of the adjunct itself.
4. Power down the Processor Port Network, also called the PPN or the main cabinet.
• In G3si, S75 and single carrier cabinets, the power switch is on the back just above the AC power cord.
• In G3R cabinets, the power switch is behind the panel at the bottom front of the cabinet.
5. Power down the Extended Port Networks or EPNs if needed.
6. Power down the UPS using the on/off switch.
7. If desired, flip the circuit breaker and turn the bulding power off.
8. If necessary for safety, unplug all equipment, move or cover it to prevent damage from water or lightning.
9. To restore power, see the Restoring Power procedures.

How do I restore power to my Definity system after a shutdown?

5. If equipment has been unplugged, plug it back into the original outlet.
6. If building power is off, turn it on.
7. If the circuit breaker is off, turn on the circuit breaker.
8. Turn on the UPS.
9. Power up the Extended Port Networks, also called EPNs or the non control cabinets. (If your system has only one cabinet, skip this step.)
• On s75, G3si and single carrier cabinets, the switch is in back just above the AC power cord.
• On G3R and large cabinets, the switch is behind the panel on the bottom front of the switch.
6. Power up the Port Processor Network, also called the PPN or control cabinet. (If you only have one cabinet, it is the PPN.)
• On s75, G3si and single carrier cabinets, the switch is in back just above the AC power cord.
• On G3R and large cabinets, the switch is behind the panel on the bottom front of the cabinet.
7. This will cause the system to reload the translations. This could take 15 minutes for small systems and up to 45 minutes for large systems.
8. Restore announcements with the command restore announcements. This can take up to 40 minutes.
9. Power up adjuncts such as Intuity Audix, Call Management Systems or Call Accounting Systems. For directions, go to the Web page of the specific product.
10. Look for alarms that may need to be cleared, use the command display alarms.

Re: Definity Graceful Shutdown

I forgot the announcement boards. If you have 750C announcement boards you can skip this step as they have built in memory on the board. As far as powering down the adjuncts (Intuity, Octel, CMS, etc) realize every time you power down equipment there is a chance it won't come back up smoothly. I've been an AT+T, Lucent, Avaya tech for 35 years and have NEVER powered down an Intuity when I needed to power down a Definity to make a repair. I have done this thousands of times and think your only asking for trouble.

What Avaya reccomends and what gets done in the real world are two different stories
