Intercom w/message light?

I have a G3siV6:

I was asked this question:

"I want to be able to BUZZ my secretary and if she is there she will pick up and there will be a automatic line of communication, if she is not there, some kind of light will go on telling her when she returned that I was trying to reach her. This needs to be 2-way."

I know I can set the intercom up between the 2 to ring the phones but the part of lighting the light if not available is what I am not sure of. My first thought was LWC but he will not want to do something seperate to leave a notification.

Any thoughts?

Would the LWC option be the only option to do a 2 step approach?

Re: Intercom w/message light?

We have some Doorway intercoms that have dry contact closures for door strikers or gate openers. You could rig one of those to turn on a lightbulb over the poor secretary's desk. Or, better yet, one of those cool strobe lights.

What would be better than intercom would be a busy-indicator. First, he would know whenever she is on the phone because the lamp would light. Second, a single press of the busy-indicator button would "speed dial" her extension, and finally if her extension goes to cover he would simply hit the LWC button while the call was in progress. This would work in a similar manner to the intercom but it would cut out some steps. With intercom he would have to hang up, press the LWC button followed by dialing her extension number but with the busy-indicator he would only have to press 2 buttons (busy-indicator and then LWC) for the entire operation.

Angry Re: Intercom w/message light?

If you have voice-mail, have the boss call the secretary's extension. If she isn't there all he has to do is leave a message telling her what he wants and when she returns her message waiting light will be on and she can get him the information he needs w/o ever calling him back. This cracks me up when a boss wants to go back to the buzzer and signals, like when they had key equipment. No one wants to use voice mail and save themselves some time. He will do a lwc to the secretary, she will have to call him to find out what he wants. If he left her a detailed message in the first place.......

This is not at all unusual. There is something to be said about direct contact. It lends to verification that the communication was received and understood, confirms accountability for any required action and allows for immediate clarification if required. While you and I may believe that this "old fart" method of communication passed with the dark ages, if it makes an executive more comfortable and thereby increases his/her effectiveness then it's our responsibility as the keepers and configurators of the technology to make every effort to give them what they need to succeed.

Cool Re: Intercom w/message light?

Al,

While you are correct in your answer about giving the executive what he wants, most of the "older" ones don't realize that endless call backs generated by leave word calling messages eat up much more time than leaving a voice-mail message in the first place.
If the executive in the previous strings called the secretary by use of a busy indicator or speed dial button, rather than the intercom, his call would end up in voice-mail if she didn't answer, eliminating a call back or visit from her to find out what he wanted.

Re: Intercom w/message light?

Thanks for the suggestions....

The executive in question recently had an office move, before he had an "opening" in his office that was right at the secretaries desk sort of a "Drive Through Window" where all he had to do is look towards the opening and shout his requests and could see if she/he was not there at that moment. Now he is in a office with frosted glass fron walls and secretary across the isle in a cube with 5 foot panels. He's lost......

One thought I had was to auto message waiting light for a phantom station and have a button programed on his phone to light that button on his secretaries phone. Doe Manual-Message-Waiting do this?

I guess the question is will: man-msg-wt:_442_ button on the boss's phone light the aut-msg-wt: 442 button on the other phone?
