Definity One
Hey all,
Trying to sort out what's needed to connect a Definity One to an IP Office. I keep seeing references to definity one not needing C-Lan and MedPro boards, but all the documentation I can find on specifically connecting to IP Office, or indeed definity IP trunking in general, involves these circuit packs. Definity One doesn't seem to be very well documented, at least from what I've found. Can anyone help me out? Do I need these cards or not? If not, what do I do instead? I have a def1 here in my lab, as well as IP Office. I used to be pretty good on the ECS, but got away from definity shortly before the definity one, IP600, and then MultiVantage line came out. Trying to get a grip on the particulars of each of these is a bit of a headache :) Peter |

Re: Definity One
Well, there is a fork in the proverbial road here. You can network to the IP Office without the CLAN and MedPro via T1 or PRI HOWEVER that job aid is specifically for h.323 trunking in which case both those cards would be necessary.

Re: Definity One
We had a Definity One system, now an 8100 with the upgrade to rel 11. Yes you will need a CLAN and MEDPRO card to make this work. The IP port on the back of the unit has to be used for administration of the system and on this system you don't log into the CLAN as you would with a Prologic, so you will have three IP interfaces after installing the cards. Note that if you grow and want to add more CLANs and MEDPROs to this system you won't be able to because it has limits and you won't find them until you try to make the changes you thought you could.
We run three locations off of this unit with a total of less than fifty people, at the main office with 6408D+ phones, another location with 4612 IP phones linked across a shared T1, and the latest location with shared T1 setup as an IP trunk. The IP office site uses 6408D+ phones. If I had a Definity One (i.e. 8100) given to me I'd still have to think hard about using it. Someone in the organization bought this before I came onboard with this group. I guess it would make a good foot rest. |

Re: Definity One
foot rest - hehehehehe. That's kind of the opinion I've been coming to. Unfortunately, my company put in several of these (including the first one in canada apparently) before I came on board. Now I've got a cust with Def1 at HQ and 1 IP Office in a smaller location, I want to sell them more IP Offices on the strength of linking them all to HQ.
I've been doing more research, it appears to me you can OPTIONALLY (boy Avaya loves that word) purchase the co-resident CLAN feature, meaning you can use the NT lan port as your clan interface, but it looks like I will indeed still need a medpro. Interestingly enough I also found the first excellent quality overview of a product I've ever seen Avaya do - for the S8x00 w/ g700's. Now I'm kinda salivating to play with one - they look pretty cool. Too bad the old definity cards aren't compatible, or I'd see if we could upgrade our def1 customers :) Peter |
