Question Remote Access to PBX

We have a G3r V6 and the only way we can access the switch remotely is with ASA via modem dialup . Avaya says we have to upgrade to at least V9 software and install a C-Lan ckt pack etc. I don't have the budget to do this. Is there an alternative to get to the switch via the network without using Avaya's high dollar solution?

Someone told me that on a Nortel system they were able to access the switch via a Lantronix terminal server box which connected to the serial port on the PBX and then they could access via the network.

Thanks
Joaquin

If you have a network, go out and buy a LANSAT-10. This allows you to use your network and ASA.

Yes ... a Lantronix UDS-10 (http://www.lantronix.com/products/ds/uds10/index.html). They cost around $150. Basically, you configure the UDS-10 with an IP and plug it into a 10Mb ethernet port. The other end is configured as Serial 9600 N/8/1 and plugged into the Terminal connection. End result: you telnet to the UDS-10 and it converts your console port to a telnet session. Alternately, you can place an A/B serial box inline so that you can actually use the console when you're physically in the phone room.

The LANSAT-10 works as well, but at $525.00 vs. $150 the UDS-10 is a much more cost effective solution.

I believe the only difference between a UDS-10 and a UDS-100 is the ethernet interface (10Mb vs. 10/100Mb) ... but check the lantronix website to be sure.

You can use a Data module for dial up within the network this will connect faster at 19200, useful for multiple logins to the switch.

Re: Remote Access to PBX

Where can I get instructions for installing the data module on the G3r.? I've never done that.
Thanks

Re: Remote Access to PBX

Al,
I was able to get the UDS100 terminal server installed and I can access the PBX on com1 port via the terminal server using the ASA application, but I have a problem when I disconnect in ASA I really don't get disconnected from the PBX.

When I attempt login again I get garbled text on the ASA login screen and I'm still at the command prompt screen. I tried changing every setting I could find to try to fix it but to no avail. This is a sample of what I'm talking about *MC23,1,*MC23,1,Command: *T23,10*Z.

If I ignore the random characters and logoff and then log back on it will clear the screen to normal but it only clears the screen for one time. I made sure I set the the terminal type to 513 but it didn't make any diffrence.

Lastly I tried to connect the USD100 to access Audix on Com 2 but I was not able to get that to work at all so far.

Re: Remote Access to PBX

Make sure you type logoff at the emulator prior to closing ASA. The TS will keep an active serial connection to the PBX even when you disconnect your IP session from the TS.

Re: Remote Access to PBX

I'm using the ASA "GEDI" interface and the only option I have is disconnect I have no option to logoff.

Of course you do. Enter the command "logoff" in the command window and press F3. -THEN- disconnect ... or simply use Terminal Emulation.

Re: Remote Access to PBX

Al,
It appears my version 1.11.05 of ASA does not support this in GEDI when I type the logoff command, I get the message " command not supported by GEDI, use emulation". I tried it with Emulation and it does work like it's supposed to.

Thanks,
