We were having modem problems at one cunstomer's site. Well, as a long time modem guy the first diagnostic technique that I employed was to reset/power cycle the modem. What no power cable? That shouldn't be a problem ... we'll just unplug the USB cable and plug it back in. BAD IDEA! Brought the server to its knees. There were a couple of spontaneous interchanges, all active calls remained up but no new dialtone was issued and no incoming calls were delivered until Linux finished investigating why one of its mounted devices disappeared and, "hey ... what's this new device that was just plugged into my USB port?" That took about 8-10 minutes and freaked out everyone on the site ... especially me.
Yeah ... lesson learned! <grin>

Wowsah. That's hard to believe - I mean, its a USB port, why not act like one. I need to move the LAN connection for one of my servers to another blade in our switch (add some redundancy). I thought I would just move the offline server, you know a quick pull-n-plug. Now I'm sceert.
