Yes I did take down a working PBX once, thats why :)
Funny thing is that changing the NTP on the offline is ok. However changing the gateway is not. It caused the StandBy to go active. Two active shelfs are not good. :)

Another rule of thumb: Never make non-Definity changes to the ACTIVE server.
We were having modem problems at one cunstomer's site. Well, as a long time modem guy the first diagnostic technique that I employed was to reset/power cycle the modem. What no power cable? That shouldn't be a problem ... we'll just unplug the USB cable and plug it back in. BAD IDEA! Brought the server to its knees. There were a couple of spontaneous interchanges, all active calls remained up but no new dialtone was issued and no incoming calls were delivered until Linux finished investigating why one of its mounted devices disappeared and, "hey ... what's this new device that was just plugged into my USB port?" That took about 8-10 minutes and freaked out everyone on the site ... especially me.
Yeah ... lesson learned! <grin>
