The quality of the call is actually good. The cut off occurs without warning. The display on the phone changes from showing the Ext. and person I am talking to, to just showing my extension number as in the idle state.

I have installed VoIP Monitoring Manager on a trial basis to try to help me isolate to QoS issues or something else.
