How is the quality of the call? Is it really bad and then drops or is it fine and just cuts off? If it is bad, it is likely you are having QoS issues and the call is finally failing due to that. If it is fine and then just cuts off, try to see if how the link is holding up. VPN can be used all right for single VoIP connections (soft phones, etc), but trunking seems pretty risky.
