For the 6400 Series phones, the call history is stored and provided by the switch. For the 5400 Series phones the call log is performed by the phone itself. Two very different methodologies to the same feature, leading as you've discovered to different behaviours.

Sadly there's no button feature, as far as I know, that will let a 5400 Series phone user get at a copy of their call history held by the switch.

PhoneManager's not a bad option, for just call history its free except for the hassle of installing.
